Apply to be on the Attendant List

Becoming a Personal Care Attendant

Attendants assist individuals with physical disabilities in performing the necessary activities of daily living. This may include bathing, dressing, toileting, cooking, dishwashing, cleaning, or more specialized health care.

Some people require assistance only a few hours per day; others may be highly dependent on their personal care attendants throughout the day.

In all cases, the relationship between consumers and their attendants must be one of mutual respect and open communication. Therefore, prior to being hired, you will be interviewed by the individual with a disability and, in the case of children, his/her family. They will ultimately determine who is hired.

As part of the application process, you must (by law) register with the Family Care Safety Registry and undergo a background check. (Delta Center will provide you with the necessary forms.) Any findings on the background check will require your obtaining a “good cause waiver” before you can work for a consumer. (Again, this is required by law.)

If you are applying to work with children, you must also undergo 20 hours of training in CPR, first aid and other pediatric care practices prior to working with a consumer.

Delta Center maintains a list of attendants who are interested in providing personal care. Delta Center provides this list to consumers to use as a resource to find personal care attendants. If you are registered with the Family Care Safety Registry, complete the following. If you are not registered, please register yourself at http://www.dhss.mo.gov/FCSR/BackgroundCheck.html.
(Note: when filling out the application for the background check, check off only Personal Care Worker.)
